Cancer is the main cause of death in Brunei Darussalam from 2004 to 2007 with the death rate of 55 point 1 percent per 100 thousand people in 2007.
In a message in conjunction with the World Cancer Day today, the Minister of Health, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi disclosed that from 2002 to 2006, the National Cancer record showed that a total of 1,348 cancer cases were identified which was an average of 269 cases per year. The record also showed that lung cancer normally occur among the male while breast cancer among the female. Other cancers include cervical, endometrium and nasopharynx.
According to Yang Berhormat cancer cases has been on the rise in the country and even more alarming is that breast cancer cases have been identified at an early age, lung cancer also occurred among non smoker and obesity was linked to endometrium cancer at a young age.
The theme of the this year's World Cancer Day, which is celebrated on every February 4th is 'Cancer Can be Prevented Too'. It is aimed at encouraging people to take simple steps to prevent cancer disease.
In the message Yang Berhormat also outlined four major ways for cancer prevention, namely, stopping consumption of tobacco products, a healthy diet and lifestyle, preventing Hepatitis B infection that cause cancer and staying away from alcoholic beverages. The theme is in line with the effort of the Ministry of Health to raise public awareness on the disease, and to promote healthy lifestyle among the citizens and people in the country.
Cancer is also one of the main cause of death througout the world. According to the World Health Organisation, WHO it is estimated that 84 million people died of cancer between 2005 and 2015 if preventive and control programmes are not implemented. Cancer is a disease which can be prevented and treated. More than 30 percent of cancer cases can be prevented if the public adopt healthy lifestyles.
To prevent and control cancer in Brunei Darussalam, the Ministry of Health has taken various measures including the implementation of the 2005 Tobbaco Order and Regulations so as to reduce the rate of tobacco products consumption as well as to reduce lung cancer in the country.
The Ministry of Health takes serious attention on the provision of hollistic and high quality treatment. To further improve treatment and health care services, through joint venture with the Jerudong Park Medical Centre,JPMC, the Oncology Unit of RIPAS Hospital has been permanently transferred to the JPMC on 21st December last year. The transfer is aimed at providing a more comprehensive Cancer Centre as national consultation centre to treat, cure and prevent cancer in the country,as well as to upgrade the quality of living of cancer sufferers. The centre provides special and more appropriate facilities as well comfort for cancer patients.
In conjunction with the World Cancer Day this year, the Ministry of Health will organise activities that will educate and instill public awareness on simple ways to prevent cancer and encourage them to change their attitude by adopting advices given.
