Harmony is the key to living in a community that is developed and progressive as an outcome of a cultural community. The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports said that harmonious living can be achieved by once again practising the old ways such as holding gatherings, voluntary and welfare works. Dato Paduka Awang Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal was speaking at the 2010 International Museum Day this morning.
According to Dato Paduka Haji Jemat, harmony can be achieved by being polite, having respect to one another as well as preserving the traditional Bruneian culture or adat istiadat. The 21st century is a century filled with challenges and tests where globalisation can be seen everywhere. It is a process of changing mind-sets, ideology, technology and others that has permeated to the international world. He added that people are more exposed to negative influences through electronic and mass media as well as print media. It is here that museums play a vital role in preserving cultural values.
Dato Paduka Awang Haji Jemat also presented prizes and certificates to 3 recipients of the 2010 Exemplary Worker as well as to 5 officers and staff who are retired. The function ran concurrently with the launch of 2 books, entitled 'Buku Secalit Warna' which depicts the Art Gallery collection and 'Buku Warisan Budaya' which explains about the traditional cooking ware used by the Bruneian people in the olden days. The International Museum Day themed 'Muzium untuk Keharmonian Sosial' or `Museum for Social Harmony` stressed on the wide and challenging role of museums.
