In view of the need to tackle the problem of the disposal of plastic waste, the Ministry of Development through the Environment, Parks and Recreation Department, JASTRe has added Mondays to the NO Plastic Bag Day Initiative starting yesterday, at the same time making it the whole week for the No Plastic Bag Initiative at shopping centres and business premises. The addition is to realise the government's desire towards No Plastic Bag Everyday by 1st January 2019.
The RTB crew's visit to a number of shopping centres in the Brunei Muara District, showed a majority of consumers giving an encouraging response by bringing recyclable bags while shopping. However, there are still some people who do not yet know of Monday's addition to the No Plastic bag Day Initiative. The success of making a reality of the desire to make Brunei Darussalam free from plastic pollution is fully dependant on the action of all parties, especially from supermarkets and shopping centres, retailers and the public who use plastic bags. If there is no public awareness on pollution from plastic bags, all plans organised by the government will be unsuccessful. In the initial stage, the addition of days to the initiative involved shops and shopping centres listed under the No Plastic bag Initiative and was extended to other plastic bag users such as retailers, restaurants and food stalls nationwide.
"It takes a nation to end plastic pollution", is the slogan for the Addition of Mondays to the No Plastic Bag Everyday initiative, which stresses the importance of every party in making a success of the effort to reduce plastic pollution. The No Plastic Bag Day initiative not only contributes to a healthy environment, but also instils awareness to the society on the importance of reducing plastic bag use which can cause negative effects to the environment.
