The 3 day National Creative Industry Forum 2012 has put forward a number of recommendations, among them for Brunei Darussalam to publish at least 200 quality books per year as well as creating Islamic themed production materials or production materials related to Borneo. From a digital media perspective, the curriculum of schools and higher education institutions need to incorporate digital media content. The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports highlighted the matter at a ceremony to hand over the resolutions and recommendations of the National Creative Industry Forum.
Present was the Deputy Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina. Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Hamid bin Haji Mohammad Jaafar, who is also the Chairman of the Forum, went on to highlight the pressing need for research and development. In terms of traditional arts and handicrafts, it is recognised that there is a need to identify and catalogue information on craftsman and experts on traditional arts in the country, as well as the need to protect and preserve our traditional cultural heritage, be it tangible such as kain tenun, or intangible such as dance and traditions.
Overall, the forum has successfully highlighted the huge potential that the creative industries can play in the economic growth of the country. Nevertheless, the challenges that other countries who have successfully developed their creative industries have gone through can act as a guide in developing the creative industries in Brunei Darussalam. Apart from that, policy and legislation to regulate the creative industries must be drafted as a regulatory measure. Towards that end, one of the main recommendations of the forum is the establishment of a National Body on Creative Industries.
