In the ASEAN region, demand for electricity has soared amidst the challenges of climate change and resource depletion that need to be mitigated. Looking at the current energy composition in ASEAN, in terms of energy resources, different member countries have different patterns - some are blessed with oil, gas or coal while others have very little energy resources to none. Â
Thus, it is important that such resources are pooled and synergised through the Connectivity Framework to reflect a regional energy scene that calls for more stable supply and more diversified supply mixes. This was stated by the Permanent Secretary for Upstream at the Prime Minister's Office during the 28th Meeting of the Heads of ASEAN Power Utilities / Authorities, HAPUA Council this morning at a leading hotel in Jerudong. Â
Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya further underlined that success of the Connectivity aspiration through ASEAN POWER Grid will not just help ensure greater connectivity between ASEAN in terms of energy infrastructure but also greater energy security. He said HAPUA's important task now is to prioritise and continue to speed up the implementation of the ASEAN Power Grid respectively by addressing the challenges associated with them. The challenges include reliability of operation, safety standards and procedures in generation and transmission, the reference model for investments in the interconnection projects and issues concerning cross-border sales and transmission of electricity.
The meeting was chaired by the Acting Director of the Department of Electrical Services, Awang Haji Shawal bin Yaman. The meeting discussed the progress of various activities under HAPUA including renewable energy, power quality and reliability as well as human resource. The rapid progress of the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity through ASEAN Power Grid will substantially contribute to achieving ASEAN Community by 2015 and beyond, was also discussed. The next HAPUA Council Meeting is scheduled to take place in Cambodia next year.
