Jawi writing is the treasure and heritage of the Malay race. As a zikir nation, Brunei Darussalam gives serious attention and priority toward the use of Jawi writing. To consolidate the use of Jawi writing mean to empower the Malay language and race itself. These were highlighted to a presentation of a main working paper during the National Conference on Jawi writing; Methods and its implementation held a hotel in Jerudong.
Present was the Brunei Darussalam Chief Syarie Judge, Yang Berhormat Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Haji Yahya. The Acting Director of Islamic Studies in his working paper among others touched on the implication and the use of Jawi spelling methods which varies especially at the educational institution in Brunei Darussalam. Dayang Hajah Rusita said the adoption of Jawi writing in the country should be implemented to avoid misunderstanding among the community that use Jawi writing such as students. Beside that it also able to improve and consolidate the skill of Jawi writing among the younger generation.
Awang Haji Tamam @ Haji Ahmad Shah Tamami from the Curriculum Development Department, Ministry of Eduction while presenting his working paper entitled 'Langkah-Langkah Memperkasa Ejaan Jawi' or steps to empower Jawi Spelling by recalling Jawi Education curriculum, increase the writing and publication of Jawi books, s cooperation from government and private agencies, expanding jawi materials through internet, providing courses and workshop on Jawi spelling, training human resources who are experts in Jawi as well as increasing the role of the higher educational institution in the country.
Confusion over the Za'ba Jawi spelling and guidance on the Jawi spelling being used in the archipelago have created different opinions in the aspect of spelling, pronunciation and style of writing. This matter was raised in a working paper presented by the Director of the Language and Literature, Dayang Hajah Aminah binti Haji Momin entitle "Cabaran Dalam Melestarikan Sistem Ejaan Jawi Yang Disempurnakan" which was presented by her representative, Awang Haji Adnan. She among other proposed the need to have a coordinated proactive action implemented for further action on the problem of uniformity of Jawi spelling that can produce manuscript or guidance which are costumer friendly and the need to have a Jawi software that based on the Brunei version known as the Jawi of Brunei Darussalam, for the future of Jawi in the country.
