The Demerit Point System launched on the 3rd of May was part of efforts to ensure drivers in Brunei Darussalam are more disciplined, cautious and abides by every road traffic regulations.
Through such a system, the enforcement agencies will be able to identify high risk drivers who are frequently carry out traffic offences which can lead to accidents. The Minister of Communications at a media conference on the progress of the demerit point system yesterday afternoon explained that in realising the programme's implementation, efforts should be made to enhance the understanding of the public through a number of roadshows in the four districts.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah said this includes holding courses for the enforcement agencies, the provision of a complete demerit point system booklet in both Malay and English Languages as well as holding operations and roadblocks in several locations either together with the police or separately.
In efforts to tackle the problem of reckless or inexperienced drivers, the Ministry of Communications through the Land Transport Department has approved a number of measures towards creating a polite and disciplined driving attitude though defensive driving lessons that will be instilled in driving schools for new drivers as well as the demnerit point system.
