National

The Land Transport Department announced the revised policy for the Visible Light Transmission, VLT rate permitted for tinted glass and solar film to be installed on vehicles in this country. Among the purpose of the revised policy is to provide convenience and options for vehicle owners regarding the use of tinted glass and solar film on vehicles. The new VLT rate is intended to help reduce heat and harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun from penetrating through car windows, and also to reduce glare while driving. To obtain approval and register for the installation of tinted glass or solar film at the new VLT rate, the public can visit any LTD branch counters, starting on 1st of August.

The service fee is 20 dollars per vehicle, and the approval processing time is either one day or on the spot when the application is presented at the counter. Vehicles with previous VLT rate approvals are still valid. However, if vehicle owners wish to change their tinted glass or solar film to the new VLT rate, they are required to reapply for approval and registration for the installation. It is an offense to install tinted glass or solar film with the new VLT rates without obtaining prior approval. If convicted, a compound fine of up to $500 may be imposed.
