National

The trend of influenza-like illness, ILI infections in the country to-date remains stable, with no increase compared to recent months. The increase in influenza-like illness ILI infections at the end and beginning of the year is an expected seasonal phenomenon, especially for countries experiencing winter. The Ministry of Health in its statement on the status of the influenza-like illness, ILI and human metapneumovirus, hMPV infections in Brunei Darussalam shared that hMPV infection is not a new disease and is not categorized as a notifiable disease under the Infectious Diseases Act, Chapter 204 in Brunei Darussalam.

It is a viral infection that can be spread through respiratory droplets such as mucus or phlegm, saliva or nasal discharge that are released when an infected person sneezes, coughs, speaks or breathes. It can also spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces. hMPV typically causes mild fever and flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals. However, it can lead to severe infection in individuals such as the young children, elderly, and those with weakened immune system. In Brunei Darussalam, 45 cases of HMPV were detected in 2024, compared to 88 cases in 2023. Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine for hMPV. Treatment is focused on reducing the symptoms of infection such as fever, flu and cough.

- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or hand sanitizer (especially before handling food, before eating, after using the toilet, or after coughing or sneezing);
