07/04/2025  Self-sufficiency Level Increases

National

Brunei Darussalam's annual food industry output comprising the agriculture and fishery sectors increased by approximately 41% from $525M in 2017 to $742M. In paving a direction for the food industry development and strengthening the nation's food security, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism has identified 6 key commodities, namely rice; chicken, chicken egg; beef; vegetables; and fish. For the past 3 years, the country has achieved self-sufficiency level for paddy at 8%; 103% for chicken eggs; chicken meat at 100%; beef and buffalo meat at around 2.3%; tropical vegetables at 72%; and fish at 74%.

The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, entrepreneurs and farmers remain committed to increase the said commodities' self-sufficiency level. Hence, the ministry through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood will implement 3 major initiatives to increase the country's paddy output, such as encouraging the use of high-yield hybrid rice varieties, carrying out research, and trying out the suitability of new rice varieties at specific locations.

It is hoped that by increasing the main commodities' self-sufficiency level, it can strengthen the nation's food security, reduce dependency on food imports; stabilise prices; ensure adequate food supply; and stimulate the growth of local agriculture and fishery industry that can contribute significantly towards the country's Gross Domestic Product.
