17/05/2025  World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025

National

Brunei Darussalam's long-standing policy to provide universal access to education has given women and girls equal opportunities to upgrade their knowledge and skills, and attain employment in various professional fields that includes the ICT sector. In 2024, women make up approximately 34 per cent of the ICT workforce across all sectors, reflecting a gradual increase of 4 per cent from 2020. The Minister of Transport and Infocommunications stated the matter in a message in conjunction with the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. According to Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, this demonstrates the growing trend of active participation, representation, and leadership of women in shaping the digital economy - whether as innovators, entrepreneurs, technologists, or policymakers.

Yang Berhormat added that the great potential of ICT is recognised to empower the participation of every member of society in social and economic development, including women and girls. With access and the right skills, they can drive positive change in families, communities and beyond. However, language and literacy gaps, financial constraints and under-representation of women in STEM education and careers continue to be barriers to their entry into the digital economy.

Therefore, AITI has been at the forefront of efforts to support digital inclusion and gender empowerment through various outreach and education programs. One such initiative is “Digital for All", a national program aimed at equipping communities with essential digital skills. The efforts help bridge the skills gap and foster digital confidence among citizens, ensuring that no one is left behind in the country's digital transformation.

The theme for this year's celebration is "Gender Equality in Digital Transformation." The theme calls for us to jointly build a digital future that is inclusive, empowering, and equitable for all.
