His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then attended a Bilateral Meeting with His Excellency Doctor Tamas Sulyok, President of Hungary. During the Bilateral Meeting, His Majesty hoped that the active interaction between the two Foreign Ministers would continue to contribute to the positive momentum of bilateral relations by opening up new avenues to expand cooperation and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations, which is an important milestone to further strengthening dialogue, understanding and institutional cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of investment, education, energy and capacity building in supporting Brunei Darussalam's economic diversification efforts beyond the oil and gas sector.        

 

In the titah, His Majesty also expressed his appreciation to the Hungarian Government for the scholarships to the first group of Brunei Darussalam students and His Majesty further welcomed Hungarian students to continue their studies in Brunei Darussalam. To further expand cooperation in the field of tourism, His Majesty welcomed the facilitation of visa-waiver arrangements and expressed hope that cultural, youth, and professional exchanges would continue to be strengthened, thereby deepening people-to-people ties between the two countries.

 

The two Leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest, including the development of ASEAN, the ASEAN–EU dialogue relationship and the engagement of Hungary and the historic accession of Timor-Leste as the 11th ASEAN Member State. His Majesty welcomed Hungary's participation in the 25th ASEAN–EU Ministerial Meeting to be hosted by Brunei Darussalam as the Coordinating Country in April 2026.

 

His Majesty also touched on climate change, where His Majesty stressed the need for continued collective efforts and with the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change in Brunei Darussalam, the centre will become a regional initiative to address environmental issues, and welcomed Hungary's support in research, data sharing and capacity building related to sustainability.
