07/01/2026  Challenges in the Paddy Industry

National

Paddy production since the past five years has ranged between 3,500 metric tonnes to 4,100 metric tonnes per year. The slow growth in the paddy industry's output was due to challenges faced by farmers such as unpredictable weather, El Niño and La Niña phenomena, and attacks by crop pests. This was among the matters shared by the Assistant Director and Head of the Paddy Industry Division, Department of Agriculture and Agrifood in an interview with RTB.

According to Dayang Khairunnisa binti Haji Omar Ali, the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood will always assist local farmers to address challenges they face so that they can strive to increase local rice production.

Meanwhile, a farmer, Awang Muhammad Joh Rezuan bin Abdullah @ Radin shared that he cultivates several paddy varieties including the BDR 5 using traditional method.

Paddy planting and production are hoped to increase the nation's paddy output and the rate of rice self-sufficiency, aside from enabling local farmers to earn income.
