A strong earthquake was reported to have occurred at 12:57 local time on 23rd February early morning. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.9 with a focal depth of approximately 600 kilometres. The epicentre was located in Sabah, Malaysia, approximately 19 kilometres from Kampung Mantanani and 256 kilometres northeast of Bandar Seri Beagawan, Brunei Darussalam.
According to the Brunei National Seismic Centre NSC, Geotechnical and Geological Survey Section, Department of Technical Services, Public Works Department, the event was detected by local seismic stations in the country. Several areas within the country reported to have experienced light tremors following the incident. However, the tremors felt were minor and did not pose any threat or risk to public safety or infrastructure. The earthquake does not present any potential hazard to the country. The NSC will continue to monitor seismic activity in the region and will provide further updates should significant additional information become available
