Oral health problems not only affect physical health, it can also have a significant impact towards a person's well-being. This includes serious sleep disturbance; emotional changes; difficulty in concentrating; and prolonged stress; which in turn can raise the risk of depression. Research shows that oral diseases can lead to serious systematic health problems, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and respiratory infections. This was among the matters underlined in the Minister of Health's message in conjunction with the World Oral Health Day 2026 which carried the theme 'A Happy Mouth Is A Happy Life.'

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar explained that the Ministry of Health through the Department of Dental Services is also actively implementing various programmes to promote oral health to all levels of society. Among them, the 'Senyum SiManja' programme implemented at 16 health centres and hospitals nationwide for children aged 1 to 4 years. Meanwhile, the 'Senyum Pelajar' Programme is carried out in kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. The 'Senyum Komuniti' programme targets selected communities, and the 'Senyum Kasih' programme is specifically for special needs patients.

The Ministry of Health also provides School Dental Services for pupils at 46 primary and secondary schools to ensure that students have good oral health before completing their schooling. The programme consists of tooth brushing training at all primary schools nationwide to encourage proper dental care services.

Celebrated every 20th of March, the World Oral Health Day is an initiative to raise awareness on the importance of maintaining oral health. In conjunction with the celebration, the public is encouraged to continue practicing good oral hygiene every day.
