28/03/2026  Marriage Application and Rice Production were raised during the Questions for Oral Answers

After convening for 11 days, the First Meeting of the 22nd Session of the Legislative Council lowered its curtain, 28th March 2026, and was adjourned to a date that has yet to be decided. The Council also approved the Resolution according to Article 83(3) of the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam 1959 and the Speaker of the Legislative Council's Speech. The sitting began with Questions for Oral Answers raised by the Appointed Members. Among them, were marriage application and rice production.

 

On marriage applications, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Halbi bin Haji Mohammad Yussof, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Defence explained that citizens or permanent residents who wish to marry in the country or overseas, must obtain approval to ensure records and information between agencies are aligned.

 

On the status of the construction of the Persons with Disabilities Centre building, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports explained that several overseas visits and studies have been made to observe and exchange ideas on the best practices carried out by other nations. The findings, according to Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad, can be made as a reference in formulating inclusive designs, operational models, facility management, and integrated approaches to empowering the Persons with Disabilities' community.

 

Next was on the guidelines on appointing the Board of Directors for Government-Linked Companies, GLC. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy shared that a committee had been established to determine the membership of the boards of directors. The board's performance assessment are also conducted periodically to ensure every GLC is managed professionally and transparently.

 

Meanwhile on the progress of rice production's self-sufficiency rate, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism explained that the establishment of the Hybrid Rice Research Centre is planned to strengthen research and development of rice varieties that are more suitable to the nation's soil condition and climate. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin highlighted that collaborations with the private sector is also encouraged to increase investment in the production, processing, and marketing technologies of local paddy.
