Brunei Darussalam will continue to work together with ASEAN Dialogue Partner countries including the Russian Federation to support regional and international efforts in addressing the current security challenges faced by this region including transnational crime. This was stated by the Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office as Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee, NSC during the 6th ASEAN-Russia Consultations of the High Representatives for Security Issues, held in Moscow, Russian Federation, recently.
Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu was in the Russian Federation to attend the 1st International Security Forum organised by the Security Council of the Russian Federation from 26th to 29th of May 2026.
During the 6th ASEAN-Russia Consultations of the High Representatives for Security Issues, the Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office conveyed his appreciation to the Security Council of the Russian Federation for the opportunities extended to Brunei Darussalam's security agencies to participate in training programmes organised by the Russian Federation through relevant ASEAN platforms, such as the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Transnational Crime and the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Drug Matters.
The Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Miniter's Office also held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Alexander Venedictov, Deputy Secretary to the Security Council of the Russian Federation, to discuss matters of mutual interest under the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU between the NSC of Brunei Darussalam and the Security Council of the Russian Federation. During the meeting, both sides expressed their utmost satisfaction with the close cooperation and strong ties established between Brunei Darussalam and the Russian Federation in the field of security. Views were also exchanged to identify other areas of cooperation that could be explored under the MoU in the future.
The Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office also had the opportunity to attend the Plenary Session of the 14th International Meeting of High-Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Matters, chaired by His Excellency Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, and attended by Ministers and senior representatives from 120 countries.
The Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office also had the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with Mr. Sergei Mikheev, Deputy Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation, to discuss opportunities for bilateral cooperation on matters of mutual interest. Also present were His Excellency Pengiran Muhammad Husaini bin Pengiran Penggawa Laila Bentara Istiadat Diraja Dalam Istana Pengiran Haji Alauddin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plepotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to the Russian Federation.
