The cessation of trawler activities will begin on the 1st of January 2030. This measure is an important effort and will benefit local fishermen, especially in ensuring sustainable and responsible management of fishery resources, by reducing pressure on fishery resources. In opening the Brunei Darussalam Conference on Sustaining Our Oceans: Innovation, Governance and Resilience for a Blue Future, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, stressed that such measures also enable marine ecosystems to recover naturally, as well as strengthen the country's sustainable food security. The ceremony took place at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, 2nd June afternoon.
The event ran concurrently with the launch of a book on coral reef monitoring and management programme. The conference continued with a keynote address on threats to coral reefs caused by natural factors and human activities. The conference was held in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2026 which starts on 2nd of June, until the 4th of June.
