National

Mangrove forests play a vital role as natural coast defences and powerful carbon sinks. The mangrove restoration pilot dubbed the Carbon Akar project, marks an important step forward in strengthening environmental protection and advancing the shared sustainability goals. The project was launched at Serasa Beach, 11th June afternoon. The project is designed to assist companies in measuring greenhouse gas emission, and take climate actions by supporting mangrove restoration.

It was inaugurated by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. The event brought together government agencies, industry partners, technology partners, community members, youth, volunteers and conservation stakeholders in support of Brunei's first community-led mangrove restoration project. Hosted by Poni Foundation with support from Poni Group and ASTARI, the launch was part of Ocean Week Brunei 2026, held in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2026.
